According to Sgt. Jameka Moore with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Troop H – Meridian, the crash happened around 2:00 a.m. on Highway 45 near County Road 345.

Investigators said a 2022 International 18-wheeler driven by Mario Mosley of Butler, Alabama, was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 45 when the driver encountered a pedestrian walking in the middle of the roadway.

Authorities said Mosley attempted to avoid the pedestrian by swerving and partially leaving the highway. Despite the effort, the right front of the 18-wheeler struck Austin. Both the tractor-trailer and Austin came to rest along the southbound lane of U.S. Highway 45. Austin later succumbed to his injuries.
