Howard Austin, 63, Dies After Being Struck by 18-Wheeler on Highway 45 in Mississippi

Howard Austin, 63, of Shubuta, Mississippi, has died after being struck by an 18-wheeler in a tragic crash on U.S. Highway 45 in the Rolling Creek Community early Friday morning, July 10, 2026. According to Sgt. Jameka Moore with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Troop H – Meridian, the crash happened around 2:00 a.m. on Highway 45 near County Road 345.

Investigators said a 2022 International 18-wheeler driven by Mario Mosley of Butler, Alabama, was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 45 when the driver encountered a pedestrian walking in the middle of the roadway.

Authorities said Mosley attempted to avoid the pedestrian by swerving and partially leaving the highway. Despite the effort, the right front of the 18-wheeler struck Austin. Both the tractor-trailer and Austin came to rest along the southbound lane of U.S. Highway 45. Austin later succumbed to his injuries.

Mississippi Highway Patrol troopers notified Austin’s next of kin, and the crash remains under investigation as authorities continue gathering evidence and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the collision.
