On Friday, July 4, 2026, shortly before 6 p.m., emergency crews responded to reports of a boat that had capsized several hundred yards off Zuanich Park in Bellingham Bay. Officials said Kristopher was alone aboard an 18-foot powerboat when the vessel overturned, leaving him in the water.
The Bellingham Fire Department, United States Coast Guard, and other emergency responders quickly began a rescue operation. Fire crews on shore were able to locate the overturned boat, while marine rescue teams worked through challenging conditions to reach the scene. After approximately 30 minutes, Coast Guard crews were able to partially right the vessel and locate Kristopher in the water. He was brought aboard the rescue vessel Salish Star, where firefighters and Coast Guard personnel immediately began CPR and advanced life-saving efforts.
