James Meyer Obituary, SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — James R. Meyer, a 55-year-old resident of Sioux Falls, died Tuesday night, July 7, 2026, following an officer-involved shooting during a police response to a welfare check at a residence on East 20th Street.
According to authorities, officers with the Sioux Falls Police Department responded to a home in the 3200 block of East 20th Street shortly before 10 p.m. after receiving a report related to a welfare check. Officials said a person inside the residence opened fire on responding officers, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
During the incident, one Sioux Falls police officer was struck by gunfire. The officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was reported to have serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities identified the deceased suspect as James R. Meyer of Sioux Falls. Officials said Meyer died at the scene after officers returned fire during the confrontation.
The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. As part of the process, DCI will prepare a case report and shooting summary for review by the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office to determine whether the officer’s actions were justified.
