A man found dead following an apartment fire Saturday morning at the Owendale Apartment Complex has been identified as 48-year-old Kataurus Dontay Bryant, according to the Yolo County Coroner’s Office. The fire was reported shortly before 8:15 a.m. in the 3000 block of Albany Avenue in Davis. When firefighters arrived, they found a fire burning inside an apartment bedroom and were able to quickly extinguish the flames.
During a search of the apartment, firefighters discovered Bryant deceased inside the residence. A dog was also found and transported to a local veterinary hospital for treatment. Officials said no one else was believed to be inside the apartment at the time of the fire. The blaze did not spread to neighboring units, and no firefighters were injured while responding to the incident.
The Davis Police Department and Davis Fire Department are jointly investigating the cause and origin of the fire, as well as the circumstances surrounding Bryant’s death.
Mutual Housing California, which manages the Owendale Apartment Complex, released a statement expressing heartbreak over the tragedy and sadness following the death of one of its residents. The organization said it is working with first responders and providing support and resources to residents affected by the incident as the investigation continues.
