Matthew Mayer Obituary, Buffalo, New York – The Canisius High School community, the University of Dayton family, and many friends and loved ones are mourning the tragic loss of Matthew Mayer, a 20-year-old student-athlete whose life was unexpectedly cut short following a car accident on July 6. A member of the Canisius High School Class of 2024 and an incoming junior at the University of Dayton, Matthew was remembered for his academic dedication, athletic ability, humility, and the kindness he showed to everyone around him.
Matthew’s passing has left a deep sense of grief among those who knew him, including classmates, teammates, coaches, educators, and family members who described him as a young man whose character and compassion made a lasting impression.
Born with a passion for learning, teamwork, and personal growth, Matthew built a reputation as someone who gave his best in every area of his life. During his time at Canisius High School, he excelled both academically and athletically, earning the respect of his teachers, peers, and coaches. He was known as a dedicated student who balanced the demands of the classroom with his commitment to soccer.
Canisius High School Soccer Coach Orville Roberts remembered Matthew as an exceptional student-athlete and a person whose positive spirit stood out both on and off the field.
“I will always remember his bright smile,” Roberts said. “He was the definition of a student-athlete.”
Roberts reflected on the many conversations he shared with Matthew before and after training sessions, describing him as humble, kind, and quietly determined.
“As his head coach, I shared so many behind-the-scenes moments with Matt,” Roberts said. “He was such a good person, always kind and mild-mannered. I will always remember his bright smile and our conversations before and after training.”
Throughout his high school career, Matthew demonstrated a strong commitment to excellence. Roberts highlighted his achievements in the classroom and his dedication to improving as an athlete, noting that Matthew was a member of the Honor Society and worked tirelessly to earn a starting position while contributing significantly to the success of the soccer program.
“We will honor him this coming season,” Roberts said.
Matthew’s impact extended beyond his accomplishments. Those who knew him remember a young man with an infectious smile, a welcoming personality, and a genuine ability to make others feel valued. Whether he was competing on the soccer field, studying in the classroom, or spending time with family and friends, Matthew approached life with kindness, integrity, and gratitude.
As a student at the University of Dayton, Matthew continued pursuing his goals while carrying the same dedication and positive attitude that defined his years at Canisius. His journey reflected the qualities admired by those around him: perseverance, humility, responsibility, and a commitment to becoming the best version of himself.
Matthew’s family described him as a beloved son, brother, and cherished member of their family. He is lovingly remembered by his parents, Lisa and Tom Mayer ’87; his brother, Joe Mayer ’22; his uncles Bob Mayer ’77, Jim Mayer ’76, and Mike Mayer ’75; along with extended family members, friends, teammates, classmates, and mentors who are grieving his loss.
The Canisius and University of Dayton communities have come together to honor Matthew’s memory and recognize the meaningful impact he had during his young life. His coaches, teammates, and friends continue to remember him not only for his athletic talent but also for the compassion, humility, and positivity he brought to those around him.
Visitation for Matthew will be held Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at C. Mertz and Son Funeral Home, Inc., located at 911 Englewood Avenue in Buffalo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Amelia Church, located at 2999 Eggert Road in the Town of Tonawanda.
Though Matthew Mayer’s life ended far too soon, his legacy will continue through the many lives he touched. He will be remembered as an outstanding student, a committed athlete, a loyal friend, and a loving son and brother whose memory will remain deeply treasured.
